academic article (abstract) A field Proof-of-Concept evaluation, using injection and passive additive deployment methods, was performed to demonstrate anaerobic remediation of chlorinated and nonchlorinated-benzene groundwater contaminants. Work performed as landfill closure/remediation program, in compliance with overseeing Department of Environmental Management Order of Approval. Results of the 7-month evaluation demonstrated > 90% decrease in site Contaminants-of-Concern (COC) 1,2- and 1,4-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, and benzene without costly long-term aboveground support equipment.

academic article (abstract) In this study we have investigated the potential of a new isolated strain of Enterobacter cloacae (ERCPPI- 1), for bioremediation of an oily sludge contaminated soil in aqueous phase. Contaminated soil with black color and sticky texture was sampled from a polluted site near Shiraz oil refinery, Iran. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content of this sludge was 66.1% (w/w) which contained more than 48% (w/w) asphalts and resins.
academic article (abstract) The site located near an ecological receptor had cis-1,2-DCE and VC concentrations of 47,000 and 8,000 ig/L, respectively, in the source are wells. A conceptual site model was developed to locate the source (undocumented buried drums) of groundwater contamination. In-situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR) using carbon source and ZVI particles was used. Aquifer geochemistry at the site is anaerobic and mildly reducing. The groundwater is relatively stagnant, with an estimated groundwater velocity of about 0.0023 ft/day.
academic article (abstract) Bioremediation was evaluated for tri- and dichlorobenzenes, monochlorobenzene, and benzene in a freshwater wetland at a Delaware Superfund site using field sampling, in situ microcosms, and flow- through bioreactor testing. Field sampling and microcosm results showed that both aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation occurs in the wetland and that bioaugmentation with WBC-2, a dechlorinating culture developed for degradation of chlorinated ethanes and ethenes, could enhance anaerobic degradation.
academic article (abstract) Remediation of a large 7-acre, free-phase gasoline (product) plume has been accelerated by combining both physical and enhanced biological treatment technologies. The strategy reduced the estimated remediation time frame from 15 years to less than 5 years, decreased estimated power consumption by 800 megawatt-hours, and preserved approximately 150 million of gallons of groundwater in an arid agricultural area. The project entered monitored natural attenuation in December 2012 and is on track for a no-further action (NFA) determination in early 2014.
